On Sunday, September 13th, four Athens area candidates along with four others from the Southeast region completed a three-day seminar to become League Cycling Instructors (LCIs). The League of American Bicyclists teaches instructors “to help people feel more secure about getting on a bike, to create a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and to ensure that people on bikes know how to ride safely and legally.”
The four candidates from BikeAthens join Professor Chris Mojock, who was previously the sole active LCI in Athens. Athens now has 5 active LCIs to bring more opportunities to teach safe cycling education to the community.
Over three days of virtual training, all of the LCI candidates learned the ins and outs of the League’s Smart Cycling curriculum and intensive parking lot training and road riding. Current LCIs observed the candidates and evaluated their progress and safety behaviors.
The seminar was organized by Georgia Bikes! and hosted by BikeAthens. Scott Long, executive director of BikeAthens and one of the new LCIs said, “We are excited about getting more certified instructors in Athens and all over the Southeast region. This will allow us to offer more in depth training on a regular basis and potentially get even more LCI instructors certified to teach. It’s important to our local cycling community that all people who ride in the Athens area have the opportunity to get educated on how to ride smart.”
