POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:       Executive Director

Status:  Full-time with health insurance allowance

Salary:   $40,000 to $44,000/year plus a monthly health benefit allowance.  Salary is grant funded, pending yearly renewal.

Vacation:  2 weeks annually

 

General functions, duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the Board of Directors in ensuring that the organization has a long-range strategy for achieving its mission and provide progress reports.
  • Develop and execute annual work plans; manage and execute existing grant commitments.
  • Engage and build membership according to organizational goals.

Budget and finance:

  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, laws, regulations, and grant reporting requirements.
  • Work with the Board in preparing an annual budget; see that the organization and its programs operate within budget guidelines.
  • Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan. Raise minimum $5000 via new grants or new events.
  • Work with the Finance Committee to maintain consistent reporting to the Board on the agency’s financial position.
  • Jointly, with the Executive Committee, oversee the submission of grant proposals.

Communications and outreach:

  • Conduct official correspondence of the organization, publicize its activities, maintain website content and cultivate media contacts through weekly newsletter, press releases, and social media.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative efforts with community groups.
  • Ensure that BikeAthens and its transportation interests are represented on key county, local, and regional committees; attend public meetings relevant to infrastructure changes and local transportation issues; maintain knowledge of local and regional issues as they relate to the mission; maintain contact and form positive relationships with local government officials.
  • Coordinate the planning of organizational events (i.e. Bike to Work Day, cLips of Faith, Community Rides, Annual membership meeting, MLK/Hands on workday, Bike to Market, BRP bike sales, Holiday Bike Parade, etc.).

Board relations:

  • See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and important factors influencing it.
  • Provide leadership in developing and maintaining annual programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board and staff along with executing the plans and policies authorized by the Board.
  • Coordinate with Board and other volunteers to delegate duties when necessary.
  • Report to the Board monthly via: 1) written Executive Director and budget reports, 2) Executive Committee meetings and 3) Board meetings.
  • Ensure Board and Committee agendas & minutes are recorded, published and distributed in a timely fashion.

 

Current Grant Requirements:

  • Develop and implement Bicycle Safety presentations to local community organizations, University of Georgia organizations, local county schools, and the Athens/Clarke County court system.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
  • Have thorough knowledge of and be able to communicate the latest bicycle safety ‘Best Practices’.
  • Grant cycle is October 1 through September 30.

 

Major Qualifications

  • Masters Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Non-profit management and bicycle/alternative transportation experience.
  • Experience in grant writing and development.
  • Experience with teaching and/or giving presentations to large groups.
  • Business writing skills and strong oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lead meetings.
  • Ability to manage time wisely.
  • Background knowledge on bicycle and pedestrian transportation topics, such as Complete Streets, Safe Routes to Schools, and the needs of bicycle commuters.
  • Self- motivation with ability to effectively work both independently and in teams.
  • Maturity, enthusiasm, passion for the cause and sense of realism.
  • LCI certification or desire to become LCI certified.

 

This position is located in Athens, Georgia. Athens is home to the University of Georgia and is consistently ranked in the top 10 of best small towns and best college towns in the US. Athens has a vibrant music scene, many arts opportunities, hosts several sporting events, and puts on a variety of annual cultural events such as AthFest and Twilight Criterium.
