Athens-Clarke County has hired Toole Design Group to create new bike-walk plan, officially called Athens in Motion, for the entire county. The bike portion will update and overhaul ACC’s 2001 Bike Master Plan. This is the ACC’s first Pedestrian Plan. Toole’s scope of work will include an education, encouragement, and safety strategy.
The fresh approach will introduce a host of improvements: a clearer philosophical approach; best-practice designs; low-cost solutions; and perhaps most importantly, an updated list of community-approved priorities. The planning process started in Spring 2017 and is expected to last until Summer or Fall of 2018. The development of a quality plan will require a lot of public input. There will be multiple opportunities to provide feedback. The first is an interactive, editable wiki-map on which you mark places you walk or ride, place you would like to walk and ride, areas where you do not feel comfortable, etc… You can also agree with other users’ comments. Areas with multiple comments will receive more weight. If the map looks cluttered, don’t worry–you can zoom in for more detail. The map will be up and act until late October.
BikeAthens is a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee, which will meet the consultant on a regular basis to shape the plans. All meetings are open to the public. Still, we highly recommend anyone interested in better places for walking and biking attend these meetings. Stayed tuned to this page for all public meeting and outreach updates.
